By studying pedagogic psychology andpsychological linguistics, it can be drawnthe teacher has an enormous effect on students’ psychology in English Learning. But some teachers lay too much emphasis on thedevelopment of students’intelligence, neglecting whether students’ psychology is healthy. They ignore students’ psychological factors play an important role in English learning.
1. Lacking in Emotional Communication between Teachers and Students
Emotion is the core of human’s psychological mechanism. It is a powerful innate driving force, can directly act on students’ study behaviors and subtly influence and change their study quality.Oneresearch puts that if teachers share the identical level of teaching ability and professional skills, students tend to be fond of the amiable and kind teachers. However, many teachers only realize they are the intermediate and transmitter of teaching message, considering class as a place to pass on knowledge and neglect to conduct emotional communication with students, which is detrimental to students’ psychology. For instance, the first obstacle for the first-year English majors to overcome is to correct their pronunciationand make it standard. But with the influence of dialects, some students have obvious accents, and they may be afraid of being laughed at and feel shy to speak up to practice. Under such circumstance, if teachers, instead of encouraging and caring them more, treat them with indifference or criticize them severely in front of other students, these students will recoil in fear and belittle themselves. If things go this way, students will be tired of not only the phonetic course, but also everything concerning English.
2. Lacking in Artistic and Aesthetic Performance from the Teacher
Most students are very sensitive and pay special attention to teachers’ words and deeds, and sometimes they imitate unconsciously. According to a famous Former Soviet Union educationist, if a teacher has no facial expression or cannot control his sentiment, he is not qualified for being a teacher, let along being an excellent teacher. Studying English need innate intelligence and power of understanding that are even more important to English teachers. Especially for the English majors, they have to conduct a great amount of English study every day. If teachers still scrupulously abide by traditionalteachingideology, adopt stereotyped methods of teaching, keep conservative ideas, lack liberal and innovative awareness, and teach students like an apologist without wit and humorous language, theatmosphere of classes must be tedious and depressing, and students may feel English study dull and lifeless without any aesthetic art and vitality. Then, their psychology perhaps will be in an unfavorable position and their preference for English study may lose little by little. Consequently, it is almost unlikely for them to display their distinctive character charm in the process of English study and to appreciate the aesthetic rhythm of the English teaching.
In conclusion, the teacher plays an important role in students’ psychology in English learning. English teachers should value and care students, and treat everyone equally, thus to help students establish a healthy and active psychology to study English.
